UPDATED – Must see video: Explosion during Southern MD barn fire

A Waldorf Firefighter is lucky to be alive after a diesel tank explosion surrounded the 23-year-old in flames early Tuesday morning.

It started as a barn fire in Charlotte Hall, Charles County, Md.

“I was flowing water on the tank and actually I stopped flowing water for about three seconds,” said Allen Bizzell, who told WUSA 9 that’s all it took for the explosion to happen.

Bizzell said he was maybe 10-15 feet away and had just stopped the hose for a few seconds to call for assistance. The explosion knocked him over.

“I didn’t see the explosion. I just saw bright red everything,” said Bizzell.

Check out the video above of the explosion during a barn fire yesterday (Tuesday) morning in Charlotte Hall, Maryland (Charles County). No firefighters were hurt. Reports are that a fuel tank in the barn exploded. The video is from Deputy Chief Jeff Duer of the Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department.

A fire consumed a barn Tuesday in an Amish community in southern Maryland.

Charles County fire officials told 11 News that the fire started Tuesday morning in a barn in the 9000 block of Glock Place in Charlotte Hall. Officials said the barn was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

About 58 firefighters from Charles and St. Mary’s counties were called to the scene. Officials said about 50 to 70 members of the Amish community also helped put out the fire.
