Thank you Ray Pfeifer

Imagine you don’t have much time left in this life, but you choose to spend it in a mostly frustrating battle trying to get Washington to do the right thing. That’s a difficult task for the healthiest among us. It requires many trips to the Nation’s Capital, lots of meetings with people who may not want to meet you and hours of waiting. Thankfully for those suffering from 9/11 related illnesses Ray Pfeifer, his body ravaged by cancer, never gave up. (And Ray also took on a new battle – this one over how FDNY recognizes those who died from the diseases related to 9/11.)

In the end Ray, and others who joined him in the trips to Washington, were successful in getting Congress to do what they should have done in the first place. But also in the end, as with so many others Ray was fighting for, the cancer won.

Even though the memory of many we have elected to lead us is extremely short, FDNY Firefighter Ray Pfeifer, E-40, was in their faces often to make sure they never forgot their promises. Let’s make sure we never forget Ray Pfeifer and all of the others who joined him in that important battle.
