News12 Westchester:

An off-duty officer is being recognized as a hero after he saved the life of a man who crashed into a Mobil gas station in White Plains last Thursday, resulting in a fire.

John Vescio, a senior investigator with the New York State Police, stopped at a Mobil Gas station last Thursday on the Hutchinson River Parkway while off-duty when a car slammed into the pumps and hit several other cars including his own.

The driver, a 69-year-old man, apparently blacked out when the incident took place as captured on a security camera. Vescio pulled the driver from the car as flames began to spread and was able to save his life.

Steve Lieberman, LoHud.com:

“It happened so quick,” Vescio told The Journal News Tuesday in his first public comments since the incident. “It was hard to think. I pretty much just reacted.”

The 69-year-old driver had a medical issue and was trapped inside the car.

Vescio had been hurt in the chain-reaction crash when the pump fell on top of him. He scrambled away just as the front of the Toyota and the pump caught fire. After briefly escaping from the flames, he returned to drag the trapped driver to safety with help from another bystander.
