A driver was seen on video escaping the massive blaze that resulted from a truck crash on Route 78 in Union by crawling out of the windshield of the his cab. One driver was killed in the crash, according to State Police.

State police spokesman Sgt. Gregory Williams said a tractor-trailer, a fuel tanker and an Audi were involved in the crash. The fuel tanker, which was “fully loaded and carrying 9,000 gallons of fuel” became engulfed in flames following the crash, sending thick smoke and fire shooting up from the scene, according to Williams.

Williams confirmed that one of the truck drivers did escape through the windshield of his truck cab, as was recorded by a passing driver.

Authorities say one person is dead after a crash that caused a fuel tanker explosion on I-78 in Union Township.

The accident happened shortly after 1 p.m. near Exit 52 for the Garden State Parkway.

The tanker, which was carrying up to 9,000 gallons of fuel, erupted in massive flames after crashing into the rear of a tractor-trailer. A car that was trailing those two trucks then rear-ended them.

A terrifying fireball erupted following a multi-vehicle crash involving a tanker and tractor-trailer that left one dead on I-78 in New Jersey on Saturday.

Dramatic photos from the scene show firefighters trying to contain the inferno, which engulfed the two trucks. The collision also involved an Audi car.
