The Byron Fire Chief said at around 2 a.m. Friday they received a call of flames coming out of the home. The fire chief said a woman in her 80s was found by the front door. She is now at United Memorial Medical Center and is said to be doing okay.

Democrat & Chronicle:

Firefighters were prevented from retrieving her husband because “a flash of flames occurred,” (Byron Fire Chief Charles) Durkee said. The flames shot 8 feet in the air and burnt a power line that was connected to the house. The lines also fell on a ladder truck and hose, creating a safety hazard and making that equipment unusable.

They later found the man a couple feet from the dining room window, Durkee said.

When the power line fell, it also blocked a portion of the road, forcing the fire department to create another route for tanker trucks to bring in water.

“It took an excessive amount of time just to get water here,” Durkee said.
