Today’s Facebook controversy: Cleveland firefighter investigated for anti-gay remarks

There are now more than 60,000 comments on the Humans of New York Facebook post showing a teary 13-year-old boy with the quote, “I’m homosexual and I’m afraid about what my future will be and that people won’t like me.” But somehow those in charge of the Cleveland Fire Department discovered that a couple of those comments came from Guy Estergall, a 26-year veteran of the department.

The problem for Estergall is that the comments have prompted an investigation by the department, with spokesman Larry Gray telling WEWS-TV’s Homa Bash, “This type of action, these type of statements are unacceptable and we will not tolerate things like this.”

What Gray says the department won’t tolerate are anti-gay remarks that Estergall made in a conversation with someone named Andrew and others:

“You’re mentally ill Andrew, just like this kid and the rest of the immoral homosexuals and their supporters”

“The overwhelming majority of pedophiles are homosexuals. You need to get the professional psychiatric help you need to become normal.”

Homa Bash, WEWS-TV:

Estergall spoke with newsnet5.com and said the comments did not represent CFD or his position as a firefighter.

“It was a heated argument between me and one individual that carried away a little too far. He started name calling so I knew how to get his goat, so I did,” Estergall said. “Was it childish? Sure. But this was Facebook, this was a nothing thing.”
