Caught on video: Surveillance camera shows dramatic rescue by Denver firefighters

Our friend Eric Hurst at 5280fire.com has the story of the March 15 rescue by Denver firefighters of a person trapped on the balcony of a burning third floor apartment on Grant Street. The PPE of some of the firefighters involved in the rescue, illustrates the conditions, as they attempted to shield and remove the victim. Three firefighters were burned.

The video, above, is from a HALO (High Activity Location Observation) camera. Here’s Eric’s description of the video:

During rapidly deteriorating conditions at a 3rd floor apartment fire, Firefighters from Truck Company 8 used their bodies to shield an injured civilian from the intense heat of wind-driven flames.  At the same time, Firefighters from Truck Company 4 used a ground ladder to bring the victim to the ground to waiting Denver Paramedics.  While that was occurring, the Truck 8 Firefighters knelt down on the balcony and sought cooler conditions.  Once the victim was on the ground, one at a time, the Firefighters from Truck 8 defended the ladder.  A HALO surveillance camera captured the entire rescue on video, note as the firefighters exit the balcony they are smoking and possibly on fire.  3 Firefighters sustained what the DFD described as minor burns, 2 of those Firefighters had to be placed on light duty assignments as a result of those injuries.
