Police say bored firefighter set firehouse and other fires in Texas

A Greenwood volunteer firefighter was being held Wednesday and faces felony charges related to arson. Alan Alton Self, 24, admitted to starting multiple fires, according to a press release from the Midland County Sheriff’s Office. Bond has not been set.

Self, who has an address in Greenwood, faces a first-degree felony charge related to a fire at Valley View Baptist Church as well as second-degree felony charges related to eight other fires, according to the release.

They say he has admitted to starting fires which consumed or caused damage to the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Station on two occasions, an 18-wheeler water truck inside the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Station, a trailer home on ECR 140, an abandoned home on ECR 140, the Valley View Baptist Church and three wooden pallet fires inside the City of Midland.

The Valley View Baptist church is a First Degree Felony (punishable by not less than 5 years or more than 99 years or life) and the other 8 fires are Second Degree Felonies (punishable by not less than 2 years and no more than 20 years).

MCSO says that when asked why, Self stated that he was bored as a volunteer fire fighter and wanted to fight fires.
