Investigators think arsonist tried to harm firefighters in Endicott, NY

(Thanks to reader Wesley Mozgawa for sending along this story.)

A fire early this (Friday) morning at 117 Jefferson Avenue in Endicott, New York was intentionally set and investigators believe it was rigged to do harm to firefighters.

The fire was discovered by a police officer who smelled smoke. Inside the building, according to WBNG-TV, were cans of gas, propane and butane along with other items that investigators are not publicly discussing. When they saw how the items were rigged, firefighters left the building and attacked the fire from another location.

“The on-duty crew did a great job, made a quick knock-down,” Griswold said. “Prevented the loss of a lot of property damage around here if things had happened that were intended to happen.”

(ENDICOTT FIRE CHIEF JosepH) Griswold says if the plan was pulled off, the consequences would have been devastating not only for first-responders, but the entire neighborhood.

“If what was intended to happen had happened, there probably wouldn’t be any buildings standing around there right now,” Griswold said. “And we’d probably have a lot of dead firemen.”
