Jon Stewart warns 9/11 firefighters might need hazmat suits while lobbying Congress

Jon Stewart lobbied at the U.S. Capitol today (Wednesday) with a group of firefighters and others who were exposed to serious illness in their response to the 9/11 attacks. Stewart has been expressing frustration in the delay by Congress to renew the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.

Stewart warned lawmakers who are avoiding this issue and this group. The comedian also had a warning for those joining him in this lobbying effort:

“Today, on the Hill, you will be exposed to possibly toxic levels of bullshit. And arrogance. You’re strong men and women, but these are conditions you may never have faced before. So buckle your seat belts, and let’s get this done.”

New York Post:

Comedian Jon Stewart joined with 9/11 first responders Wednesday to lobby Congress, saying it was outrageous that they had to plead to renew their health and compensation coverage.

“I want to apologize to all the men and women — the first responders — that you had to come down here today,” Stewart, wearing a blue FDNY T-shirt, said outside the Capitol. “… I’m embarrassed that you, after serving so selflessly and with heroism, have to come down here to convince people to do what’s right.”

During a press conference with lawmakers who are supporting the bill’s renewal, Stewart also offered a warning to the lawmakers who have declined meetings with the first responders.

“I’m not on television anymore but I sure as hell know a lot of people who are and at a certain point there are a lot of congressional doors that are closed because those individuals do not want to be shamed publicly,” he said. “Well guess what: If you don’t sign onto this type of thing, it has to be known. And your reasons for it have to be spoken out loud, and out in public, these men and women deserve nothing less.”
