UPDATED: Captain Jack Rose, Mt. Marion FD in Ulster Co., NY dies during house fire

Jack Rose, the 19-year-old newly elected captain of the Mount Marion Fire Department, died Saturday night while battling a chimney fire that broke out just before 7 p.m.  at 11 Fel Qui Road, according to fire officials.

While fighting the blaze in the basement of the double-wide modular home in the remote Ulster County location, Rose went into distress, according to Saugerties Police Chief Joseph Sinagra.

Fellow firefighters brought him outdoors where they initiated life-saving measures. Rose was taken to HealthAlliance Hospital’s Broadway campus, where he was pronounced dead, Sinagra said.

During the firefighting operation interior firefighter  Jack H. Rose of Saugerties, a member of the Mount Marion Fire Department, became separated from his team. Rose was quickly located by fellow firefighters and removed from the basement. Once outside, Rose became unresponsive and firefighters initiated lifesaving measures. Rose was treated by paramedics at the scene and transported by DIAZ Ambulance the Health Alliance Hospital, Kingston Broadway Campus, where efforts to revive Rose continued. Rose eventually succumbed to his injuries.

Rose, a three-year member of the Mt. Marion Fire Department, was recently elected to the position of captain. Mt. Marion Fire Chief Dave Ayers stated his department “is devastated over the loss of such a young life and a devoted member of the community,” adding that Rose was loved by all in the fire service who knew him.

Not a lot of details yet on the death last (Saturday) night of 19-year-old Jack Rose, a firefighter with the Mount Marion Fire Department in Saugerties, New York (Ulster County). Rose was at the scene of what was initially reported as a chimney fire when a mayday was called. Here’s what Firefighter Close Calls is reporting so far:

Centerville Fire responded to a call at 1859 hours at 11 Fel Qui Road along with mutual aid from Mount Marion. Firefighters had fire in the basement of the dwelling and while operating, something went wrong, MAYDAY was transmitted and the Mount Marion Firefighter was rescued/removed from the dwelling.

Mount Marion firefighter Jack Rose died Saturday evening after going into distress at the scene of a reported chimney fire in the Centerville Fire District, according to Saugerties police.

According to Saugerties police, Centerville Fire responded to a call at 6:59 p.m. at 11 Fel Qui Road, which is off John Joy Road, with mutual aid from the Mount Marion Fire Department also dispatched.

Firefighters found fire in the basement of the residence. In the course of operations, the Mount Marion firefighter “went into distress and was rescued from the inside of the residence by fellow firefighters,” according to police.

A Mount Marion fire department firefighter killed in the line of duty.

Firefighters responded to the call just before seven Saturday evening with multiple departments arriving on the scene.

While crews were taking down those flames, officials say one fireman went into distress and was rescued from inside the home.

When firefighters arrived on scene they encountered a fire within the basement of the residence. During the firefighting operation, an interior firefighter with the Mount Marion Fire Department went into distress and was rescued from the inside of the residence by fellow firefighters. Once outside, firefighters initiated lifesaving measures. The victim was transported to the Health Alliance Hospital, Kingston Broadway Campus, where the firefighter was pronounced dead.
