A Pineville firefighter died while battling a fire at a one-story commercial strip shopping center Saturday night.

Three Maydays were reportedly transmitted during the incident. One other firefighter, reported as a Charlotte Fire Department member, has been hospitalized.

Officials confirmed a Pineville firefighter was killed while battling a 3-alarm commercial structure fire in Pineville Saturday.

Crews were dispatched to the scene at Countryside Shopping Center off Pineville-Matthews Road at 9:03 p.m. Charlotte Fire Department and Mecklenburg County Fire Departments were both called to the scene to assist.

Charlotte Fire Chief Jon Hannan said a Mayday call sounded while firefighters were fighting the fire.

Chief Hannan said two firefighters were removed from the blaze and transported to CMC.

Chief Hannan said one Pineville firefighter died and the other firefighter sustained non life-threatening injuries.

The blaze was a three-alarm fire at the Countryside Shopping Center just within the town limits of Pineville. The firefighter who died was with the Pineville Volunteer Fire Department, WBTV reported.

Two Charlotte firefighters were taken to CMC Main hospital for treatment, WBTV reported.

Late Saturday night, several fire departments posted their condolences for the fallen firefighter and the Pineville department.

“The members of HFD send our support, our prayers and our love to the Chief Officers, members and the families of Pineville Fire,” Huntersville Fire wrote on Twitter.
