The fire began around 2:30 a.m. today (Tuesday) in the 3500 block of Fruitland Avenue and may have started in an adjacent junkyard. The fire also knocked out power in the area.

Arriving firefighters had to take a defensive mode due to the heavy smoke and fire, (Los Angles County FD Spokesman Kyle) Sanford said.

“The problem with magnesium is when water goes on it, it violently reacts,” Wright said.
The strategy was to let the metals burn and try to contain the fire to its current location, Dept. Chief John B. Tripp said.
