Caught on video: Multiple large magnesium explosions at Los Angeles County fire

Raw video above from 3M views and more below from KTLA-TV and others showing explosions involving magnesium during a fire that burned in two commercial buildings in Maywood in Los Angeles County, California. The fire began around 2:30 a.m. today (Tuesday) in the 3500 block of Fruitland Avenue and may have started in an adjacent junkyard. The fire also knocked out power in the area.

Arriving firefighters had to take a defensive mode due to the heavy smoke and fire, (Los Angles County FD Spokesman Kyle) Sanford said.

“The problem with magnesium is when water goes on it, it violently reacts,” Wright said.

The strategy was to let the metals burn and try to contain the fire to its current location, Dept. Chief John B. Tripp said.
