A western New York man is hospitalized with burns suffered when his car exploded at a gas station where video surveillance captured the blast and the man being engulfed in flames.
Rochester police say the 45-year-old man from the neighboring suburban town of Greece had placed a gas can in the trunk of his car after parking near the front door of a Sunoco station around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The owner of the store, Salem Nagi, said the man had pumped gas into a container and placed it in the car.
“I think it spilled, that’s how his problem started,” Nagi said. “I think he spilled some gas in the car and went to light a cigarette in the car.”
He was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with burns to his upper and lower body. His injuries are not considered life-threatening.
