Video: Collapse at Bayonne, NJ fire injures two firefighters

Video from Mike Villanova (homer218) shot during a fire Saturday in Bayonne, New Jersey that sent two firefighters to the hospital after a wall collapse. Firefighters can be seen digging out the two injured firefighters beginning at 9:46 in Mike’s video.

Nancy Benecki-Hawkins, NJ.com:

Two firefighters were injured overnight when part of a building that was on fire collapsed in Bayonne, according to reports.

The fire broke out near Avenue C and West 20th Street around 1:30 a.m., according to reports. The addresses were eventually named as 455, 457 and 459 Avenue C.

Two firefighters were at the back of the building when the roof pancaked down, pushing the rear wall out and on top of them, the witness said.

Ellyn Marks, WPIX-TV:

Fire officials say the fire began around 1 a.m. Saturday, apparently in a trash area in the back of the building on Avenue C. The fire then grew and spread up the walls into the top floor and cockloft of the structure, which housed a laundromat and several apartments.

Officials say two firefighters fell when the building’s cockloft collapsed. Both were being treated at a hospital for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
