VEGETATION FIRE DAMAGES MOTEL
San Bernardino – At 9:43pm this evening San Bernardino County Fire responded to numerous reports of a vegetation fire behind the DoubleTree Hotel on Hospitality Lane west of Waterman Avenue. Additional callers stated the fire was threatening buildings in the area.
The initial fire rapidly spread to the west before establishing itself in a stand of trees behind the Super 8 Motel, one property west of the origin of the fire. Two vehicles were fully involved, and embers from burning palm trees were landing on the motel at the time of County Fire’s arrival.Firefighters were tasked with multiple objectives at the onset: Evacuate occupants of the Super 8 Motel, attack the structure fire, and combat the vegetation fire that was threatening the DoubleTree. To accomplish these goals, three alarms were assigned to the incident.
The structure fire was running in the attic and along the facade of the two, two-story buildings that comprise the 79-room motel. After 90 minutes, the fire was controlled with damage to approximately 40% of both structures. All occupants of the Super 8 Motel were successfully evacuated. Guests of the DoubleTree had activated pull station alarms throughout their hotel in response to the initial fire; DoubleTree staff evacuated their property as a precaution. There were no injuries to civilians. One firefighter received a minor injury during overhaul operations.
Fifteen engines, five truck companies, support units, and multiple chief officers for approximately 70 personnel were assigned to the incident. County Fire received automatic aid from numerous agencies throughout the valley.
At the time of the fire, 42 of the 79 rooms at the Super 8 Motel were occupied. Red Cross was notified to assist with the displaced guests. DoubleTree guests were able to return to their rooms.
Damage estimates are still being estimated, however 32 rooms at the Super 8 Motel were damaged, and two vehicles were lost.
