Christopher Sherman & Peter Orsi, AP via Washington Post:

An explosion ripped through Mexico’s best-known fireworks market on the northern outskirts of the capital Tuesday, killing at least 26 people, according to a Mexico State prosecutor.

Dozens of other people were hurt in the explosion at the open-air San Pablito Market in Tultepec, in the State of Mexico, according to the Mexican Federal Police. The blast sent a huge plume of charcoal-gray smoke billowing into the sky.

Mexico City newspaper El Universal reported that 70 people were injured in Tuesday’s blast.

The explosion took place in Tultepec, Mexico, a town 20 miles north of Mexico City.

Video taken by a local radio personality showed fireworks being detonated during the fiery explosion.
