KBJR-TV:

The fire started in the basement of a 9 apartment complex. It started shortly after 1 pm Monday afternoon. Virginia Fire Chief, Allen Lewis, says the fire spread through a balloon effect.

“By following up the vertical chaises that went all the way up into the attic. When we got here fire was beginning to spread all throughout the building.”

Initially, the firefighters ran into some problems trying to find the root of the fire.

“Crews had difficulties finding the seed of the fire or where the fire started in the basement due to the amount of debris that was blocking their access.”
