“We had fire blowing out of the front of the residence at the time of our arrival,” said First Assistant Chief Adam Wertman of the Hemstreet Park Fire Department.

But shortly before that neighbors told NewsChannel 13 two men living inside escaped.

Relatives of retired Troy Police Captain Robert Cipperly said he lived in the second floor apartment.

When Cipperly realized the house was on fire they said he grabbed his downstairs neighbor, who has Parkinson’s disease, and got him out of the home.
