As smoke filled the corridors of her Lauderhill apartment building, Oshina Graham faced a terrifying choice Monday: Toss her young children off her fourth-floor balcony or hope that firefighters would get there in time.

Neighbors waited on the ground with mattresses and chair cushions, preparing to catch the children, but firefighters arrived and carried the family down a tall ladder to the ground.

Graham said she was relieved when firefighters arrived. But the first ladder didn’t reach high enough.

“We got the 35-footer up, rescued the people on the balcony and we brought them all down safely,” said Lt. Jamal Clarke.
