Another attempt to name school after fallen Virginia firefighter is underway

For the third time there is a campaign underway to name a school in Prince William County, Virginia after Kyle Wilson. Kyle Wilson was 24 when he became the first firefighter killed in the line of duty in the 41-year history of the Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue.

A similar campaign to name a new high school after Kyle Wilson failed last year and the school was named instead for Virginia’s longest-serving state senator, Charles J. Colgan, Sr.

What may surprise you is there was little, if any, coverage of this firefighter’s death in the news during the day or even the week it occurred. That’s because Kyle Wilson died on April 17, 2007. The reporters and camera crews assigned to the Prince William County house fire were all diverted to cover the Virginia Tech massacre that was unfolding that same morning (more details here).

Let’s hope that Kyle Wilson’s sacrifice doesn’t again go unnoticed and his memory will live on with a very appropriate tribute.
