Hanging around: Tanker truck dangles from Baltimore bridge.
A bridge is reopened after a construction vehicle collided with a fuel tanker Friday morning, pushing half the tanker over the bridge and stopping traffic for hours.
The tanker was stuck for several hours until authorities could pull it off the edge.
Andrea Fujii reports the accident happened at approximately 5:30 a.m. Friday on the Pennington Avenue Drawbridge.
The impact of the accident drove the mid-rear portion of the tanker over the bridge.
“It was pinned between the open drawbridge and the concrete,” said Chief Robert Scott, Baltimore City Fire.
Both drivers got themselves out of their vehicles after the crash. They suffered non-life threatening injuries and were treated on the scene and transported to the hospital for minor injuries.
The tanker truck was empty at the time of the collision, but officials were concerned about residual gas and hazardous chemicals that may leak into Curtis Bay.
Firefighters sprayed foam to prevent any fires and say nothing leaked into the water.
Firefighters towed the tanker off the bridge around 1 p.m. The Pennington Avenue Drawbridge reopened around 2:30 p.m. Structural engineers spent the day checking the structural integrity of the bridge.
The cause of the accident is still being investigated.
