The DC Fire & EMS Department and Arlington Fire Department had crews on standby much of the day for some Hollywood action on the Potomac River. An explosion was supposed to happen between 9:30 and noon. It didn’t. Hundreds of people gave up waiting on and around the Key Bridge in Georgetown.

The small explosion is part of filming for a new TV series by CBS Paramount called Washington Field. It is about the exploits of the FBI’s Washington Field Office.

The scene being filmed shows a rowing shell erupting in a fire ball. A dummy was inside the boat and a woman rowed by as part of the action.

But the action came much later than expected. It wasn’t until just after 2:00 PM that the fireball shot into the air and the boat and dummy burned. As expected, no one was hurt and the explosion was relatively tame by Hollywood standards.
