Seven Baltimore firefighters hurt in apartment explosion

Early reports are that seven Baltimore City Fire Department firefighters were hit this (Wednesday) afternoon during an explosion at an apartment building in the 4400 block of Bowley’s Lane in the Northeast part of the city. News coverage indicates one of the firefighters has life-threatening injuries.

As of 4:50 p.m. ET the fire was still burning because of difficulty shutting off the natural gas supply.

WBFF-TV:

The firefighters had first-degree and second-degree burns, and one was taken to Shock Trauma with life-threatening injuries, confirmed Baltimore Fire Department.

The fire was reported around 3 p.m. at Bowleys Lane and Brehms Lane in the Mannasota Manor Apartments.

Neighbors say there was a big explosion and at lease one firefighter was thrown from the roof to the ground.

Roman Clark from the Baltimore City Fire Department confirmed that at least two firefighters were initially reported missing when they were thrown into the basement from the blast. They have both been found and are currently being treated for injuries.

Seven firefighters were injured fighting the blaze, said Baltimore Fire Chief Roman Clark. One of the injured firefighters was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma with severe injuries. She is considered in serious condition.

Two civilians were also hurt, suffering first- and second-degree burns. The injured civilians and six other firefighters were taken to “the burn center,” but fire officials did not specify which local center.
