Elizabeth Dinan, SeacoastOnline.com:

According to the fire chief, the fire was first spotted at 10:08 a.m. by a fire crew training on the city’s fire boat in the Piscataqua River. The crew radioed that heavy black smoke was seen coming from the area and all on-duty companies responded, he said.

Firefighters who entered the restaurant from the Market Street side encountered flames on the first floor, near a chimney, in the kitchen, he said.

Firefighters then went to the roof, where flames were burning near the chimney, the chief said.

A first alarm was declared at 10:12 a.m. and because the fire extended across the third floor, second, third and fourth alarms were struck to summons firefighters from across the Seacoast, Achilles said.
