The Clinton Fire Department is mourning after the death of a firefighter Saturday morning.
According to a post by the Rock Island Fire Department, a firefighter was killed while battling a fire this morning. ADM Grains confirmed to TV6 the incident occurred at its Clinton facility.
According to ADM, a fire was discovered in the silo storage bins at the loading facility. As firefighters were battling the fire, the company says, an explosion occurred. Two firefighters were hurt, one of the fatality.
ADM employees at approximately 5:45 a.m. Saturday discovered smoldering material in one of the silo storage bins at the loading facility in Clinton. Jackie Anderson, of ADM’s media relations department, said ADM immediately contacted the Clinton Fire Department for assistance. While firefighters were on the scene, a couple hours after the initial call, an explosion occurred in the silo. Anderson said two firefighters were injured during the incident and transported to the hospital. Anderson said ADM later learned that one of the firefighters died.
Representatives for ADM Grains in a statement to KWQC offered thoughts and prayers for the families of “these brave firefighters.”
“They put their lives in danger every day, and it’s hard to express how much we appreciate their selfless help in a time of need,” the statement said. “We greatly appreciate the quick response, bravery and dedication of all of the emergency responders today. We are deeply saddened at the turn of events.”
The identity of the firefighter who died has not been released and the cause of the incident remains under investigation.
