The fire broke out on Culp Lane, near the Bethalto Sports Complex, in Fosterberg, which is about 10 miles from Bethalto, before 5:00 p.m.
Two firefighters with the Godfrey Protection District were injured when part of the house collapsed. Captain Jake Ringering died from his injuries. Luke Warner was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition.
Nathan Woodside, The Telegraph:
Firefighters from multiple departments had worked the scene for nearly an hour when there was the report of multiple injuries to firefighters after part of the home apparently collapsed.
Witnesses reported over social media that at least one of the transports was escorted to the hospital by police.
Crews had been warned that full propane tanks were in the home. It was unclear if that played a role in the incident.
An official cause of the fire was not immediately given by fire officials. It appeared to originate in an area of a garage, from where injured firefighters were seen being taken on stretchers.
