12 firefighters hurt, 2 critically while packing fireworks in New Mexico

Police say two Roswell, New Mexico firefighters are in critical condition and 10 other firefighters injured in a fireworks explosion today (Wednesday) at Roswell International Air Center. At a press conference (watch below), police say the firefighters were packing fireworks for the July 4th display when the explosion occurred.

Statement from City of Roswell:

New Mexico State Police, which is leading the investigation into the Wednesday afternoon (June 5) explosion at a fireworks storage building on the Roswell International Air Center property, issued the following news release:

On Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at approximately 12:15 p.m., the New Mexico State Police was dispatched to the Roswell International Air Center in Roswell, New Mexico in reference to a large explosion.
New Mexico State Police learned that the Roswell Fire Department was packaging fireworks for the upcoming 4th of July community display when the explosion occurred. There were 12 firefighters inside the building when the explosion occurred. Two Firefighters were air-lifted to a trauma center for life threatening injuries. Ten firefighters were treated on scene for minor injuries.

Roswell Fire Department, Roswell Police Department, FBI, and ATF are assisting New Mexico State Police. State Fire Marshal is in route to the scene.

The cause of fire is still under investigation. New Mexico State Police is asking the public to avoid the area. To protect the privacy of victims and their families the names of the hospitals treating the injured will not be released by State Police. No other information is available at this time.

New Mexico State Police say a fireworks explosion has critically injured at least two firefighters south of Roswell.

City officials say the explosion occurred around noon Wednesday in a fireworks storage area on the west side of the Roswell International Air Center.

State Police say firefighters were packing fireworks for the Fourth of July when the explosion occurred.

State Police say Wednesday afternoon, firefighters were packing fireworks for the Fourth of July when the explosion occurred. So far, they do not know what caused the blast.

It took approximately 20 minutes to get the fire under control, but firefighters are still working to contain hotspots.

Several agencies were called out to assist, including the FBI and ATF. One runway was also shut down.
