At 7:00 a.m. the Howard County (MD) Department of Fire and Rescue Services reports a 13-year veteran of the department died in a large home in Clarksville overnight. The fire was reported just before 2:00 a.m. after an apparent lightning strike. According to the statement, the first firefighters went on the scene with smoke showing. The three people in the home had safely escaped. A box alarm and task force were dispatched as firefighters made an initial interior attack with RIT already in place. During the attack a mayday was called and RIT was deployed. After several minutes the downed firefighter was removed. The firefighter was transported in critical condition to Howard County General where he later died.

The firefighter is assigned to Station 10 (Rivers Park). News reports indicate the firefighter had fallen through a floor.

Howard County Fire Chief John S. Butler, who will be taking over as chief in Fairfax County, Virginia in September, is out of the country and attempting to return to Maryland.
