In Montgomery County, Maryland, 47 recruits and seven instructors are in quarantine after one recruit tested positive for COVID-19.

Kevin Lewis, WJLA-TV/ABC7:

Earlier this week, three members of Recruit Class 47 developed “viral symptoms” associated with the deadly respiratory virus. Fire department brass recommended all three undergo testing and sent everyone else home.

“It’s a component we have anticipated, we have planned to address,” MCFRS Chief Scott Goldstein told members of the media during a Zoom conference call Friday afternoon. “We’re working together with the Department of General Services to implement the process of having the academy cleaned.”

Recruit Class 47 was to have been used as a backup platoon in the event that a large number of MCFRS personnel contracted COVID and/or the department saw a surge in emergency calls. A source within MCFRS colorfully illustrated that 47 recruits could staff 23 EMT-equipped ambulances.
