SMACSS (social media assisted career suicide syndrome) surfaces in East Syracuse, New York where the volunteer chief is under investigation for posting the message above on his Facebook page. Chief Jim Brewster has been suspended as chief and suspended without pay from a paid position he has with the department.
The fire chief for East Syracuse has been suspended without pay from his village position as the mayor investigates a Facebook comment with a racial slur.
The mayor of East Syracuse said Friday he’s investigating the since-deleted comment, which appeared to be posted by an account belonging to East Syracuse Fire Chief James Brewster.

On a Facebook account that appears to belong to Brewster, this comment was posted about Rep. Maxine Waters: “Maxine gives the word N***** a bad name.”
Brewster was elected as volunteer fire chief in April.
Brewster could not immediately be reached for comment.
The mayor said Brewster has been suspended from his volunteer job as chief and his paid job as caretaker of the village fire department. That job pays about $37,000. The mayor said he is suspended without pay.
