One resident has died, one firefighter is missing, and dozens of people were injured in a massive fire that destroyed an assisted living facility overnight in Spring Valley.
Fire officials say flames broke out around 1 a.m. at the Evergreen Home for Adults at 65 Lafayette Street.
Flames engulfed the large building, and there have been numerous roof and wall collapses. Firefighters had to be moved back from the building because of the collapses.
Chris Kear, Rockland County’s director of fire and emergency services, said search teams were combing through the rubble Tuesday morning and small excavators will be brought in to assist.
The firefighter who is unaccounted for was on the third floor rescuing a resident, Kear said. He made a Mayday call. Firefighters went in but could not locate him and they had to back out.
