Lots of video from today’s (Wednesday) four-alarm fire at a seniors apartment building in Southeast Washington. Rescues were made and DC firefighters were assisted by U.S. Marines who ran over from the barracks at 8th and I, SE. DC’s fire chief confirms the building’s fire alarm did not work. There were mutual aid companies on the fireground from Maryland.
At least four people were taken to a hospital after the heavy fire broke out at the Arthur Capper Senior Apartments, in the 900 block of 5th Street SE, Wednesday afternoon. Residents were rushed to safety, some in wheelchairs.

The firefighter making the rescue in the video above is Davon McRae. He is the son of Lt. Kevin McRae who died of a heart attack while fighting an apartment fire in 2015. Lt. McRae was the department’s 100th LODD.
The fire department believes that all residents are accounted for, Assistant Fire Chief Milton Douglas said at a news conference Wednesday evening. Firefighters didn’t find anyone inside after doing another search, but the department said it would do another tally of residents.
After seeing smoke, U.S. Marines ran toward the building and carried seniors out of their apartments, Capt. Trey Gregory said live on News4. Marines and others could be seen rushing toward the four-story building pushing stretchers and wheelchairs.
