A DC Fire & EMS fire boat sank this morning while docked this (Wednesday) morning at its home on the Washington Channel off the 500 block of Water Street, Southwest.

Peter Hermann, The Washington Post:

Oscar Mendez, a fire department spokesman, said the 29-foot aluminum-hull boat has been taken in for repairs. He said the extent of the damage and the cause of its sinking was not known late Wednesday morning, but fire officials suspect some kind of mechanical malfunction.

Fire Boat 3, built in 2014 and the newest in the fleet, is fast and can maneuver in shallow waters, and is used primarily in water rescues. The department has another boat of similar size and the larger 71-foot John H. Glenn Jr., which has a steel hull and can break through ice.
