Los Angeles County and Los Angeles (City) Fire Departments battled a spectacular three alarm – major emergency blaze that burned and damaged nearly a dozen buildings on 58th Place just east of Hooper Avenue in the City of Florence. LAFD Firefighters first on scene reported a 100 by 300 ft. commercial building with fire showing. After quickly opening up the building and encountering heavy volumes of smoke and fire , Firefighters went directly to “defensive mode.” Utilizing ladder pipes, wagon-batteries, portable monitors and numerous handlines to quench the quickly spreading flames. During the firefight several roofs caved in and a large portion of wall on the main fire building collapsed outwards unto the street. Several small explosions could be heard inside the involved buildings. Firefighters also had to contend with several transformers and numerous power lines that crisscrossed the streets. Some of the wires were arcing. The damaged businesses included an upholstery shop, a furniture manufacturing shop, a bar, a yard with port-a-potties and miscellaneous storage areas. Other buildings, businesses and homes were also damaged in the raging fire.
