A fire captain was pronounced dead after battling a fire at an apartment building Friday in Berwick, Maine.

Berwick Fire Capt. Joel Barnes died, officials announced.

“It’s with a heavy heart that I start this information to you with the announcement that this afternoon at this fire, we lost a firefighter in the firefight,” Maine State Fire Marshal Joe Thomas said. “Capt. Joel Barnes of the Berwick Fire Department succumbed to his injuries that were received in fighting this fire.”

Barnes was in his early 30s and was one of four full-time firefighters in the department. Barnes was a Berwick firefighter for two years.

The fire was reported around 11 a.m. Friday. It drew between 50 and 75 firefighters from 12 departments in Maine and New Hampshire.

Barnes was one of two firefighters who encountered a wall of flames on the third floor and had to be rescued, said Maine Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland. The other injured firefighters were treated and released from the hospital, officials said.
