IAFF Local 36 reports on Twitter that DC Ambulance 27 caught fire around 10:00 this morning at 4738 Benning Road, SE.
WTTG-TV/Fox 5 reports there were no injuries and that the patient was transported by another unit. They also have a picture of DC Fire & EMS Department Chief Kenneth Ellerbe on the scene.
On August 2, Medic 27 from the same firehouse caught fire at Washington Hospital Center (see picture below). On July 4, Truck 16 caught fire responding to an apartment fire.
A D.C. ambulance caught fire Tuesday while on an emergency call in Southeast D.C.
D.C. Fire and EMS Capt. Gerald Fraley says Ambulance 27 was dispatched at around 10 a.m. to the 4700 block of Benning Road to help assist D.C. police with a patient.
The ambulance fire occurred while the crew was inside an apartment. Firefighters arrived to put out the fire.
A second ambulance came to the scene to transport the patient.
There were no injuries related to the fire.
D.C. Fire and EMS Chief Kenneth Ellerbe says the ambulance will be taken to their fleet maintenance division to investigate the cause of the fire and the ambulance’s service history.
Ellerbe says the department has been looking into acquiring new vehicles for its fleet.
